Renegade 4WD Club on Dump Bump

Moab, Utah    June 8, 1997

It's Sunday, June 8 and we wanted to run Hell's Revenge Trail. The first obstacle is Dump Bump. Since I broke my front driveshaft on Dump Bump, I turned around and went back to town and didn't get any pictures from the rest of Hell's Revenge.

Dump Bump

Dump Bump is basically a huge step up onto a big rock formation. The wall is nearly vertical. It is so step that when you approach it, you must "bump" (hence the name) your front tires up onto the wall. Same with the rear tires. Then you must use some extra gas to pull the vehicle up the wall, because the step is so steep that all four of the tires actually lose traction. The tire squealing is very loud. The first part of the obstacle's name comes from the fact that it's very close to the city dump.

01-th 02-th 03-th Steve Turek's Cherokee dragged its rear bumper on the ground (first picture), causing the rear tires to lift up and lose traction. Stefan Roth is removing the Hi-Lift jack from where it was mounted under the bumper to get it out of the way so the Jeep could back up. The second picture shows Steve trying again. Eventually, he got hung up on the rear bumper and had to be pulled up by Steve O'Neal's Bronco (third picture).

04-th Stefan Roth in his Jeep CJ 7 trying to make it up the step. He made it up the wall with both the front and rear tires, but the front driveshaft broke and he rolled back down, almost tipping over backwards. That was the end of that trail ride for the day. The nearest driveshaft shop was in Grand Junction, Colorado.
