The Top of the World Trail is a very scenic 3 rated trail on the Moab 1-4+ scale. The trail leaves Hwy 128 at the Dewey Bridge crossing approximately 30 miles northeast of Moab and winds its way through the area south of the Dewey Bridge. The trail climbs to a scenic overlook 7000 feet high and then works its way over to the top of Rose Garden Hill. After descending Rose Garden Hill the trail follows Onion Creek Canyon back out to Hwy 128. The length of this trail and its distance from town make Top of the World an all day trip.
Here's our group of castaways airing down for a smoother ride at the beginning
of Top of the World. As it turned out, we didn't need to air down for
traction, but the ride sure was nice.
Tim Bramble
coming down Rose Garden Hill. As you can see from the suspension
flex, Tim's Jeep is one well setup rig. Tim made even the toughest obstacles
look easy.
David Beihoff
coming down Rose Garden Hill. David had a little trouble with this ledge on
Rose Garden. He got a little far to the right and hooked his right front wheel
on the large rock you see in the picture. With a little help from Tony Schaber
spotting, David was able to rock the Jeep backwards enough to turn the wheels
over to the left. A little skid plate scraping and David was able to crawl the
rest of the way down the ledge.
Kane Creek Canyon trail (3 1/2 rating) is a long trail that includes a little bit of every type of challenge. It has sand, rock climbs, steps, off camber ledges and many, many water crossings. When we were on the trail it was 107 degrees and the only water crossings that weren't dried up were at the end of the trail before the climb up out of the canyon. On the climb back out of the canyon you can see an old Jeep wreck about halfway down the canyon side. The end of the trail puts you back out on Hwy 191 for a short drive north and back into town.
Tony Schaber
coming up the hard way on Kane Creek. Like Tim Bramble, Tony
Schaber has one very well set up rig. Tony tackled this 4 foot near verticle
step without any problem.
This is the only obstacle that gave Tim any real trouble and that's because a
frayed wire shorted out his ARB fuse. Tim was able to back down the step and
use the bypass to get out of Kane Creek.
Tim coming up easy way at the end of Kane Creek.
David Beihoff attempting the hard way out of Kane Creek. David was a little
shy on clearance with only a 3 inch lift and 30 inch BFG MT's. After leaving
his mark (skid plate mark that is) on the ledge, David was able to back down
the step and take the bypass out.
