The Renegade 4WD Club decided to hold their monthly trail ride at Monteagle. So we called up the Middle Tennessee Trail Runners and asked them if they would guide us on the trails, since they live there and know the area well. We had asked for a ride in some of the rocky and rough dry river and creek beds in the area. Unfortunately, due to very recent rains, most of them had water running in them and we could only drive in the ones where the water had gone down far enough. These are some of the pictures we took.
Thanks to Patrick Corkren (patrick.corkren@sba.gov) and Stefan Roth for the pictures.
Greg Fox
is the President of the Middle Tennessee Trail Runners 4WD Club. He has an
extremely capable CJ-7 with 35 or 36" Buckshot Mudders on spring-over
Scout axles. Judging from the comments from his fellow club
members, he really makes them jealous with his driving skills.
Ken Braswell
got on this hill later than others as he was toward the rear of the group. By
that time, most of the leaves had been pushed off and the wet ground had become
very slick. He eventually made it up, but it took quite a bit of maneuvering.
Ken Phillips has a very capable Toyota pickup and is frequently seen on
Tennessee trails. He's a good driver and knows how to get the most from his
vehicle.
Stefan Roth has a "new" CJ-7, with a spring-over and 36"
Buckshot Radial Mudders. This is a usually empty runoff area that had a lot of
water in it due to the rains. It turned out to be very slick, with lots of
underwater obstacles.
Don Porter
stuck in the wash. A big rock stuck up into his engine compartment
behind the front axle near the oil pan. We lifted up the front end with the
Hi-Lift jack and rolled him back off the rock. This probably would have been a
lot easier the next day when most of the rain water would have been gone.
Eric Munsen driving up the same wash as the others. His Toyota is taller than
most and he does his own work.
Most of the following pictures are of a short, but steep and slick hill climb toward the end of the trail ride. Only a couple of people made it (Doc Bagby and Chuck Waggoner?) and everyone else had to take the bypass. It looked nasty enough that several people didn't even attempt it. As you can see from the pictures, Eric should have taken the bypass, too.
Eric Munsen
after he tipped his Toyota truck on its passenger side. All the
damage was to the door, which suffered a broken window and pushed-in sheet
metal. Recovery simply consisted of spooling out his winch cable and attaching
it to a tree with a tree strap and pulling up and to the left. By the time you
read this, Eric has already pushed out most of the sheet metal damage and
replaced the window to make it look nearly new.
The last of our group climbing out of a deep canyon.
Thank you for visiting!!!
