Renegade HomeOuray, Colorado Trip

In September 2003, three members went on a quick week long trip to Ouray, Colorado for some 4-wheeling and sight-seeing.

Ouray is nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. With a population of only 800, it's a small town that caters primarily to Jeepers and hikers. Some of the most beautiful 4WD trails are located around Ouray. Most of these are easy trails, but they provide days of breathtaking scenery.

Ouray web siteSituated in a river valley at 7,700 ft., the town has but a single main street with a few gravel side roads. Restaurants, pubs, and shops line the main street, with hotels, campgrounds, and Bed 'n' Breakfasts catering to all budgets.

Like thousands of other small mountain communities in Colorado, Ouray started out as a mining town when gold and silver were discovered in 1875. Many of the historic mining camps remain as well preserved ruins in the surrounding Rocky Mountains.

As you see the pictures of the roads, mines and buildings, just remember that all of it was constructed in the late 1800's and maybe very early 1900's. No cars, no trucks, no electricity, etc. These roads were built by hand and steam power (plus explosives) and were travelled by foot and hoof! Even the timbers had to be hauled in. All to elevations of 13 or even 14,000 feet.

The mining is long gone, but the "roads" built and used by the miners remain today as 4WD trails traversing the mountain passes.
